On the front page of today’s edition, there is a story about a man who was shot while hunting in Southampton County this past Friday. Because the investigation is ongoing, few details have been released. What is known, however, is that the victim was shot when a deer crossed between he and a fellow hunter. Fortunately, the victim is expected to survive.

Hunting is a favorite pastime for many of our friends and neighbors in Western Tidewater, and the majority of those who hunt in our community do so safely and respectfully. But this incident is a reminder that one bad decision can lead to disastrous consequences.

Always wear blaze orange when the type of hunting or the season requires it. Always treat your weapon as though it is loaded. And always, always, be aware of your target and what lies beyond.

Accidents will happen, even when all safety precautions are taken. Needless tragedies, however, can be avoided by remaining vigilant and placing hunter safety as the top priority. Please do your part. Be mindful of your surroundings and place safety above all else when entering the woods with your fellow hunters. Doing so could not just save the life of another hunter, but your very own.
