The Chicago Cubs had not been to the World Series since 1945-until this year. My husband and I are big Cubs fans. We had the amazing opportunity to go to Game 5 at Wrigley Field on Sunday and watch the Cubs WIN! They still have two more games they need to win, but no matter what, they made it to the World Series.

Wrigley Field is already one of the most loved stadiums in the country and a really cool place to visit. To be there for a World Series game though, after waiting 71 years, that’s a whole different ballgame (pun intended). Some people have been waiting their whole lives to see this moment. While waiting in line to get in the stadium, I was behind a father and son, who like all of us, were smiling from ear to ear. The son put his arm around his dad and said, “Can you imagine what grandpa would say if he were here? He would be so happy.” And that one act already summed up the whole thing for me.

Baseball has always been America’s favorite pastime. The Chicago Cubs have been the underdog for many years, but this year they were the best team in the country. Sitting there in the indescribably amazing and loud atmosphere there are a lot of thoughts running through your head. However, I can guarantee you not one of us was worrying about the horrible week we may have had, the election or anything else except that our team wins. That’s the thing I love about sports. For just a few hours it takes you away from all of your worries and hardships. It also brings us all together by the love of the game. It doesn’t matter where you’re from, your race, political stance, or anything else. For those few hours we’re all just baseball fans, high fiving strangers when our team scores and cheering them on in unison. My husband was able to share this experience with his dad, who took him to his first Cubs game when he was a little boy. I bet there were thousands of cases like that in the stadium. Fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, grandparents and grandchildren spending time together and sharing something they will never forget. I know I won’t. GO CUBS!
