HAMPTON — Sally Frances Francis, 95, passed away on Oct. 27, 2016.
She was born in Southampton County, the daughter of the late Gholie S. and Lizzie N. Burgess. She was one of 13 children.
She graduated from Capron High School in 1939 and Norfolk General Hospital as an R.N. In 1943. She worked in the hospital as an instrument nurse for two years.
She married Gilbert Francis in November 1945, and traveled extensively with him throughout his Air Force career, working as a nurse in many states and overseas in Japan. Upon his retirement they made their home in Hampton, Virginia.
She was an active member of St. Marks United Methodist Church, Hampton, the Young at Heart Sunday School Class, and the Mary Reid Circle. She was also a member of the Hampton Exchange Club.
She was predeceased by her husband; one sister, Helen Burgess; and four brothers, James W. “Bill,” Lloyd “Happy,” Roger and Raymond.
She is survived by three sisters, Swann Broocke of Courtland; Ann Davis (Wayne) of Midlothian; and Carolyn Arnsberger (Jerry) of Youngstown, Ohio; four brothers, McCoy (Dorothy) and Earl (Cecilia) of Sedley; Emerson (Shirley) of Capron; and Wayne (Barbara) of Courtland; one sister-in-law, Beth Burgess of Nashville, Tennesse; numerous nieces and nephews; and two special sisters-in-law Jeannette Carlin and Marie Fowler.
The memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, in St. Marks United Methodist Church, 99 E. Mercury Blvd., Hampton, with interment to follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be at the church following the interment.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Marks United Methodist Church or Heartland Hospice, Suite D, 41 Old Oyster Point Road, Newport News, VA, 23602.
