FRANKLIN
Walmart’s State Giving Program has awarded a $35,000 grant to the Cover 3 Foundation, a Franklin-based nonprofit organization that provides nutritious meals to children during after-school programs and during the summer.
Since 2010, C3’s Kids’ Meals program has served underprivileged children in Franklin, Southampton County, Greensville County, Sussex County, Emporia, Surry County, Petersburg, Richmond, Henrico County, Suffolk, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach and Newport News, providing over 2 million healthy meals and snacks to date.
“Once again, we are thankful to Walmart and Walmart Foundation for helping us in our fight against childhood hunger,” said C3’s founder, retired NFL player and Southampton native Greg Scott. “This grant will be used towards expanding our mission with C3F’s Kid’s Meals, again we are truly grateful.”
The Cover 3 Foundation began in 2009 as Cover 3 Football, a Franklin-based youth football program Scott started after his second year as the Defensive Line Coach for Hampton University. In 2011, the organization expanded to include providing meals and a mentoring program.
“When I finished my NFL playing career and college coaching career, I wanted to come home to my community and make the difference in the lives of the children and help the people that had helped me,” Scott said. “It’s the most important thing I can do, next to being a father.”
Scott is a 1998 graduate of Southampton High School and played for the Washington Redskins and the Cincinnati Bengals, as well as arena football, before retiring in 2007.
