Sinkhole opens on 58E

- This was the scene when a sinkhole measuring approximately 15 feet wide and 15 feet deep had opened on Route 58 East early on Oct. 11. The hole has been temporarily filled in, and the cause was a pipe failure.
FRANKLIN
A sinkhole on Route 58E near the Suffolk border is being attended to now by the Virginia Department of Transportation. Sgt. Camden Cobb, spokesman for the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office reported that Southampton County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call at approximately 4:43 a.m. today that the hole, measuring 15′ by 20′ wide and 15′ feet deep, had opened up in the right lane.
There is no indication yet with that travel lane will reopen.
Cobb added that three vehicles reported flat tires as a result of the defect to the roadway prior to the full collapse of the area. No injuries were reported.
The Virginia State Police is on scene and all of the Southampton County deputies have cleared from the area.
