WINDSOR
Four members of Girl Scout Troop 1105, based in Windsor, received the U.S. Presidential Volunteer of the Year Award in recognition of their 87 hours of community service painting mural last year on a building belonging to Fern Nunez.

Claire and Katie Anderson, Keri Barton, and Madison Stubbs received their certificates at last week’s Windsor Town Council meeting. The girls will also receive a signed letter from President Barack Obama and their Silver Presidential Award Pins, the second highest award a girl scout can earn.

Candice George of the Silver Sisters of Seven Cities presented the award. Each recipient will be inducted into the Silver Sisters as well.

A total of 33 girls from the Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast Council, which includes southeastern Virginia and northern North Carolina, received the award.

Local artist and muralist Sam Welty created the design for the mural and worked alongside the girl scouts to complete it.
