Matthew Renigar, 25, was arrested and charged on Monday with domestic assault, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, breaking and entering, abduction, brandishing a firearm and reckless use of a firearm.

According to Potter, the victim has been identified as Renigar’s ex-girlfriend and the mother of his children, who live with her. The victim told police that she awoke to find Renigar hovering over pointing a gun to her head and preventing her from leaving the room.

She was eventually able to escape with her children and notify the police.

The lieutenant added that the woman said Renigar appeared to be intoxicated and was upset about a series of text message they had exchanged earlier that day.

Deputies arrived on scene and discovered numerous gun shots to the victim’s car tires and windows. The officers formed an emergency response team and created a perimeter around the property.

Renigar was arrested when a member of the team saw a man matching the description given by the victim near the intersection of Route 258 and Waterworks Drive.

The deputy took him into custody without incident and transported him to Western Tidewater Regional Jail, where he is being held without bond.

Renigar was scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday morning in Isle of Wight County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.
