FRANKLIN
The students, parents and community members associated with S.P. Morton Elementary School spent Wednesday evening interacting, reading, having fun and getting to know the new principal, Dr. Sherie Davis, at Meet the Principal Day.

“The parents, students and community came out to the Meet the Principal event,” Davis said. “Students of all grade levels could choose books they would like to read, get their faces painted, make bracelets, bubble station, bounce houses and food. Parents were able to ask me questions as well as complete a survey about the school climate from their phone or computer.”

As previously reported in The Tidewater News, Davis is a Boykins native and graduate of Southampton High School. She had planned the Meet the Principal event to introduce herself and open the door for communication in order to help all students succeed.

Davis has reiterated several times that she believes literacy is one of the upmost important subjects in school and will make that a priority at S.P. Morton this year, which is why she was giving out books to the students who attended the event. It his her hope that the students will continue to read through the rest of the summer, helping prepare themselves for the upcoming school year.

“I was pleased with the outcome of this event,” she continued. “It was such a wonderful and gratifying experience.”

Several community members attended the event to meet her and interact with the students, such as city officials and Franklin Fire and Rescue employees.

“I had the opportunity to meet a lot of parents and students, as well as community supporters,” Davis added. “The supporters were awesome and it was a wonderful way to meet and greet everyone.”
