NEWSOMS — Sheldon Carter “Butch” Worrell, Jr., 71, passed away on Aug. 15, 2016.

A lifelong resident of Southampton County, he was the only child of the late Sheldon Carter Worrell Sr. and Margaret Hargrave Worrell.

Butch was a graduate of Southampton High School, earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Richmond and his Juris Doctor degree from Campbell University School of Law. He was a practicing attorney for over 30 years, a former mayor of Newsoms, a former member of the Newsoms Town Council and the Newsoms Ruritan Club.

Butch loved NASCAR races and pulling for both Dale Sr. and Dale Jr. especially at Daytona Beach.

He was a member of Newsoms United Methodist Church.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 48 years, Becky Williams Worrell; his son, Sheldon Carter “Donnie” Worrell III (Laura) of Poquoson; two grandchildren, Margaret Grace Worrell and Carter Lee Worrell.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Sheldon Carter Worrell IV.

The graveside service will be at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 18, in Hollywood Cemetery with the Rev. Ian Hackmann officiating.

A reception will follow in the Newsoms UMC Fellowship Hall, and the family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Newsoms UMC, c/o Jenny Bunn, P.O. Box 297, Newsoms, VA or Newsoms Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 209, Newsoms, VA 23874.
