Finding a qualified leader for any endeavor is almost always a challenge. Search committees have to be diligent in seeking the right person for the job. Experience, education, personality and reputation are important considerations.

After former Isle of Wight County Administrator Anne Seward resigned last December, the Board of Supervisors quickly first found that in Sanford Wanner, who agreed to serve as an interim administrator. He brought his own set of qualifications that have enabled the county to operate smoothly.

Speaking of which, County spokesman Don Robertson has played a large part in keeping Isle of Wight departments on track, such as the time between Seward and Wanner. Robertson’s hard work was rewarded earlier this month by being named assistant administrator.

Meantime, the search for a permanent leader continued. Interview after interview of the applicants was necessary. Finally, the announcement was made late Thursday evening: Randy R. Keaton will be the next county administrator, and he takes office on Thursday, Sept. 1.

He’s also expected to move to Isle of Wight, which will serve to strengthen his own commitment to the people as well as the job.

We’re confident the supervisors and anyone else involved have been thorough in their search, and wish Keaton and Robertson much success in their new roles.
