Local Native American tribe to host powwow

COURTLAND
The Cheroenhaka (Nottoway) Indian tribe will host the 19th annual “Green Corn” Dance Powwow on Saturday, July 23.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Cattashowrock Town, the Cheroenhaka’s tribal land in Courtland.

Festivities include Native American dancing and drumming, arts and craft vendors and traditional foods.

The Archaeological Society of Virginia will bring artifacts, and the Aztec Dancers will perform. There will be demonstrations of flint knapping and Native American beading.

Chief Walt “Red Hawk” Brown will recite the tribal history.

The Grand Entry will take place at noon, led by the tribe’s Color Guard.

The general public is encouraged to attend. Entry donations are $6 for adults, and $4 for seniors and children.
