CHESTERFIELD — Retired U.S. Col. Richard M. Scott, 76, formerly of Suffolk, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 6, 2016.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Madge Scott.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Lannie Gardner Scott; son, Michael Scott (Katie) and their children, Cooper, Rini and Sloan, of Overland Park, Kansas; daughter, Mary Jane Seay (David) and their son, Grant, of Leawood, Kansas; brother, Bill Scott (Judy) of Charlotte, North Carolina; sister, Judy Scott Powell of Chesterfield; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Richard served honorably in the Army from 1958-1988 in many capacities including two tours in Vietnam, where he earned numerous awards including the Bronze Star, Silver Star and Purple Heart. Richard graduated from the Army War College, and also received his Bachelor of Science in business from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and his master’s degree in education from Long Island University, Greenvale.
After college, he went on to teach military history at the United States Military Academy at West Point and was a faculty instructor at the Army War College. As a major, he was named to the Officer Candidate School Hall of Fame for outstanding military performance. He was also named as base commander in Bamberg, Germany. To quote many of the soldiers who served under his command, “We would follow Colonel Scott anywhere.”
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 10, in Morrissett Funeral and Cremation Service, 6500 Iron Bridge Road North, Chesterfield. Interment with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
