COURTLAND — Richard Alan Colson, 63, died on Wednesday, May 11, 2016.

He was born on Jan. 29, 1953, in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, and was a son of the late Margaret LaNeve and Roy Colson.

When he was 12 years old in 1965, Richard began working as a newspaper carrier for Landmark Communications, and eventually worked his way up through the ranks to become circulation director, and stayed there until moving to Courtland in 1986. Once here, he went to work for he Virginian-Pilot and Ledger Star until they downsized.

As a career change, Richard then took an interest in flooring and worked at Lowe’s until he was no longer able to work due to heart disease.

One of his hobbies was stamp collecting and he was an active member in the Philatelic Society. Richard also collected baseball cards and loved going to auctions and yard sales to look for deals.

Survivors include a daughter, Denise Simms of Suffolk; a stepson, Randy Logsdon; his former spouse, Bunnie Colson of Courtland; a sister and brother, Rita Moroney and Ronald Colson, both of North Carolina; and two grandchildren, “Kal-El” Barnes and Olivia Simms.

His best buddy was his cat, Storm.

A memorial service will be determined later.
