SUFFOLK
Several local girls placed in the Miss Cupcake Pageant, a pageant for girls between the ages of 6 to 16 and live in the Southeastern states, that took place on Sunday, May 1, at the Suffolk Center for the Cultural Arts. Overall titleholder awards were given out in each division, along with multiple other words for things like academics, community service and more.

Pageant director Brittany Cobb, who is a native of Windsor, brought the pageant to the area three years ago and has said it has been a continuous success. Each year community members get more and more involved by sponsoring, donating prizes and helping out the day of and prior to the event.

This year there were over 200 audience members in attendance the day of the pageant.

Each of the nine divisions had one ultimate winner. The 2016 Cupcake Queens are follows:

• Wee: Olivia Carr;

• Tiny: Kendall Hedgepeth;

• Mini: Breelyn Hewett;

• Petite: Peyton Rossler;

• Little: Elena Raiford;

• Young: Ava Raiford;

• Pre-Teen: Avery Bowen;

• Teen: Savannah Buchannan; and

• Ultimate Miss Cupcake: Emma McClelland.

Other awards given out were the Academic Award given to Maddison Zephir, Community Service Award given Madelyn Cosby, Star Cupcake Award given to Maddison Zephir and the Showstopper Award given to Emma McClelland.

The Pageantry Spirit Award was given to Bill Blake in honor of his wife, Lou Blake, who lost her battle to cancer on Nov. 12, 2015. She is the mother of Karla Cobb (pageant co-director) and grandmother of Brittney Cobb (pageant director) and Kriston West (pageant stage manager).

“This award is given through Pageantry Magazine and represents their mission statement of promoting friendship, sportsmanship and character development,” Cobb said. “It honors those who exemplify the true spirit of competition and character development whether it be one who competes or one who leads and directs by example.”

The 2016 Cupcake Queens will begin their journey representing the crown over the next year. They will not only make appearances at several events, they will also spend a lot of their time completing service project, as that is a huge part of the platform of this pageant.
