Janathian M. Porter, 18, was allegedly seen by a neighbor of the victim’s house. That person called the department at approximately 12:34 p.m. to report a breaking and entering in progress, according to spokesman Maj. Gene Drewery. As deputies responded, the caller told the dispatcher what could be seen. Porter was allegedly witnessed taking a TV and other items from the residence.

At the scene, Det. Camden Cobb said multiple units were called, including two K-9 units and Special Agent Deshaun Melton of the Meherrin Drug Task Force. When they arrived, the suspect fled the scene to nearby woods. Officers surrounded that area during the chase, and caught up with Porter around 1:25 p.m., after he had made his way to the aforementioned relative’s house.

Charges are pending further investigation, said Cobb.
