FRANKLIN
A Hampton man attempted to elude deputies from the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office in the early morning hours of Wednesday, March 16, but was apprehended after wrecking his vehicle near Franklin.

A deputy clocked a 2008 Dodge Durango driven by 22-year-old Darrick Lamont Lane headed west on Southampton Parkway at 90 miles per hour in a 60 mile per hour zone. When Lane pulled over near the intersection of Meherrin Road, he would not produce identification.

“Lane then restarted the vehicle and sped away from the deputy standing beside the vehicle,” said Major Gene H. Drewery, spokesman for the sheiff’s office.

Another deputy joined in the pursuit, to which Lane responded by blocking and attempting to run the deputies off of the road.

Lane, who was wanted out of Hampton for grand larceny, buying and selling stolen goods and attempt to defraud, wrecked his vehicle near the Pretlow Road exit ramps. He now faces additional charges in Southampton County for felony elude, driving with a revoked license and speeding 111 miles per hour in a posted 60 mile per hour zone.
