ISLE OF WIGHT
At their meeting last week, the Isle of Wight County Board of Supervisors designated April as Clean Rivers Month, per request of The Blackwater/Nottoway Riverkeeper Program.
Throughout this month, The Riverkeeper Program is “encouraging the community to pickup litter, trash and other items along the Blackwater and Nottoway Rivers, in streams and ditches, parking lots and the front/back yards of our respective homes.”
The purpose of The Riverkeeper Program is to protect the Blackwater and Nottoway Rivers, and educate the community on protecting its environmental resources.
This program has removed over 89,000 pounds of trash from in and around the rivers. By declaring April as Clean Rivers Month, the supervisors along with the riverkeepers are hoping that liter clean-up amounts will rise even higher.
All community members are encouraged to participate.
