VSU alums meet in Franklin

FRANKLIN
The Franklin, Southampton and Vicinity Area Chapter of Virginia State University Alumni Association held a meeting on Saturday, Feb. 20, to discuss initiating steps to reactivate the chapter that had existed in past years. All present at the meeting held at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center were in agreement to do so and meet the financial requirements established by the national association to reactivate the chapter.

The member’s present elected officers for the chapter as required by the national office. They are:

Frank A. Davis, President; Victor R. Picot, Vice President; Sylvia Claud, Secretary; Syretha C. Wright, corresponding secretary; Ernest Claud, Jr., Treasurer; Rev. Thomas Smith, Chaplain; Parliamentarian, Rev. Alvin Blow, Parliamentarian; and Dr. Willie Bell, Sergeant at Arms.

The Chapter also discussed and established the following standing committees. Scholarship, chaired by Betty Jones/Pat Sowell; membership and recruitment chaired by Dr. Willie Bell; fund raising/activities, chaired by Almeta Davis and Victor R. Picot.

Present at the meeting was Dr. Garvin S. Maffett, Vice President of Institutional Advancement at VSU, who represented VSU President Dr. Makola M. Abdullah. Dr. Maffett addressed those present and extended comments about the importance of an alumni chapter and answered many questions from the floor.

At the conclusion of the meeting, all present enjoyed a slate of food and fellowship.
