The Virginia Department of Transportation will have a public hearing at 5:30 p.m. today in the Southampton County Administration Building, where it will present proposed plans for the replacement of a bridge on General Thomas Highway over the Nottoway River. It will be an open-house format with no formal presentation.

Senior public affairs specialist Tiffany Whitfield said through a press release that the purpose of the meeting is to give residents an opportunity to review the project exhibits on display, meet with VDOT representatives and provide input.

The project will replace the structurally deficient bridge with one that meets the current design standards, with additional right-of-way and utility easements to widen the bridge with 12-foot lanes and nine-foot shoulders. The project would also include roadway improvements to the approaches and a new storm water management facility.

Those who cannot attend the hearing are asked to submit comments on the proposal by Monday, Feb. 29, to project manager Diane Geouge by email at n.geouge@vdot.virginia.gov, referencing “Route 671 over Nottoway River Bridge Replacement Comment” in the subject line.
