Denton O. Spruill

COMO, N.C. — Denton Oscar Spruill, 85, died on Feb. 14, 2016, at the Vidant Roanoke Chowan Hospital of Ahoskie, North Carolina.

Mr. Spruill was born in Como, North Carolina, on March 17, 1930, a son of the late Leslie Earl and Nona Whitley Spruill.

Oscar was a lifelong member of Buckhorn Baptist Church in Como, where over the years he had served in numerous capacities including superintendent of Sunday school, deacon and R.A. leader. He was also a member of the Como Ruritan Club and served as a board member for Hertford County Farm Bureau.

He retired from doing what he loved, farming.

Besides his parents, Oscar was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley F. Spruill; a brother, Leslie Earl Spruill Jr.; a sister, Nancy Carol Spruill; and a step-son, Stephen F. Byrum.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Linda O. Spruill of the home; a son, Dennis Oscar Spruill and wife, Katrine, of Como; a step-daughter, Lynn L. Fields and spouse, Deborah, of Murfreessboro, North Carolina; a step-son, Michael W. Fields and wife, Carrie, of Carter, Oklahoma; two sisters, Maxine S. Sumner of Ahoskie, and Jean S. Carter and husband, Walter, of Norfolk, Virginia; and a brother, Jerry Spruill of Conway, North Carolina. Also surviving is a grandson, Denton T. Spruill of Como; a granddaughter, Shirley Lee Spruill Rountree and husband, Eric, of Como; three step-grandsons, Christopher M. Howell and wife, Alicia, of Cordell, Oklahoma; Jacob Fields of Carter, Oklahoma; and Coleton Byrum of Murfreesboro; a step-granddaughter, Trista L. Kelley of Sayre, Oklahoma; and his beloved companion, Mandy.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Feb. 16, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Garrett-Sykes Memorial Chapel, Murfreesboro, and other times at the home.

The celebration of life service will be on Wednesday, Feb, 17, at 11 a.m., in the Buckhorn Baptist Church, Como, with the Rev. Sean Gallagher officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
