Meherrin Road was closed for approximately nine hours on Monday afternoon as crews worked to clean up peanuts and fix a light pole after a tractor trailer overturned around noon. Trucks from the Virginia Department of Transportation were on hand to detour traffic around the accident, which occurred at the intersection of Washington Drive.

“A tire on the trailer blew out, causing the load to shift and turn over into the ditch,” Major Gene Drewery, spokesman for the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office, said in a press release. “The vehicle had to be left in place to repair the damage to the light pole.”

Drewery reported that there were no injuries and no charges against the driver, though peanuts were still being shoveled into trucks on Tuesday afternoon.
