At Monday night’s Franklin City Council meeting, it was announced that the police department had received federal grant funds from the Office of Justice Programs under the Bulletproof Vest Partnership fund. The amount received is $1,288.40.
The BVP fund was created by the Bulletproof Vest Partnership Act of 1998, under the U.S. Department of Justice. The purpose is to provide a resource to state and local law enforcement.
Beginning in Fiscal Year 2011, the program made it a requirement that all agencies receiving any grant funding from them, has to have a written “mandatory wear” policy in effect. This is due to the increasing number of law enforcement line-of-duty deaths.
Since 1999, the program has awarded over one million vests.
