CARRSVILLE
Carrsville Elementary Bulldogs recently came together in creating care packages for servicemen and women overseas. This is the third year the school has participated in the project.

Toiletries, snacks, candies, Tidewater News calendars, Western Tidewater Living magazines, handwritten cards and drawings were assembled last Friday afternoon.

Brenda Redd again orchestrated the effort. She said that 50 boxes are to be sent this year; last year it was 28.

“It’s up a little bit from the past,” said Redd, who works at the Smithfield Post Office.

She got money to pay for the items through the Carrsville, Smithfield and Courtland Ruritan clubs. Redd added that Taste of Smithfield would also be participating.

Jim Williams, vice president-elect of the Carrsville club, said his fellow Ruritans would also take care of postage, which he estimated at $140. The group also regularly sponsors the school, the Carrsville Volunteer Fire Department and the Boy Scouts.

Before the students came in, the items were first laid on tables so that they could quickly place them in the provided boxes. Doing the arranging were school faculty, Principal Clint Walters and his wife, Tina, along Williams, Redd and Army Lt. Col. Scottie Moore, a family friend of Brenda’s. The former Franklin resident came down from Northern Virginia.
