PORTSMOUTH — Doris Cook “Dot” Evans, 85, passed away peacefully in her home with family members at her side on the morning of Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2015.
She was born in Boykins, Virginia, on July 4, 1930, to the late Charles and Xenia Cook; and spent most of her life in Portsmouth, Virginia, raising five children and being a homemaker.
In 1947, Doris graduated from Alexander Park High School in Portsmouth, and married her handsome Marine husband, Joe.
After working at the G.E. Plant for a number of years, she became a switchboard operator for Portsmouth General Hospital and retired after 20 years.
Doris continued to keep busy by doing volunteer work for Meals on Wheels and as a Reading Mentor at Hodges Manor Elementary. She was a wonderful and giving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, aunt, cousin and friend.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Joe Evans Sr.; a son, Joe Evans Jr.; a brother, Earl; and three sisters, Jean, Frances and Ruby.
Left to cherish her memory are her two daughters, Donna Buttles and husband, Mark, and Sharon Robinson; two sons, Ron and Tim Evans; two grandchildren, Matt Wood and Charles Brice; a sister, Catherine Pryor; her three furry children; and a host of extended family and friends.
Doris was a fun loving, caring, generous person to everyone she knew. She kept her crazy sense of humor right up to the end.
A special thanks to the staff at Heartland Hospice for their kindness in helping care for our mother.
