FRANKLIN
The Virginia High School League and Virginia Independent School Athletic Association on Monday announced the first round pairings for their respective state playoff brackets.

The Franklin Broncos, thanks to their 7-2 record, will have a bye week to start the VHSL playoffs, while the 8-1 Isle of Wight Chargers will host Broadwater in the opening round of the VISAA playoffs.

Franklin, which finished tied for second in the TriRivers District, is the No. 3 seed in the playoffs. They’ll face the winner of Lunenburg Central and Lancaster.

Isle of Wight, meanwhile, is the top seed after winning the Virginia Colonial Conference. The Chargers defeated their first round opponent, 60-26, earlier this season.

The game is set for 7 p.m. on Friday at Hooper Field.

In the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association playoffs, Southampton Academy advanced to the state championship game by defeating Lawrence Academy, 52-0. The Raiders, 9-2, will now face Northeast Academy, whom they beat 50-44 earlier this season, for the title.

Kickoff is 1 p.m. on Saturday at Arrendel Parrott Academy (Kinston, North Carolina).
