To the Editor:

It has been said that the best predictor of one’s future is their past performance. It is for this reason that, as a group, we are supporting our Sheriff Mark Marshall and Commonwealth’s Attorney Georgette Phillips. While some would say we have to support these two, the truth is we choose to support both of these individuals based on their past performances.

In the past four years Sheriff Marshall has transformed the Isle of Wight Sheriff’s Office. We have equipment that is second to none, including a forensic lab to accommodate in-house processing of evidence. As investigators, we have been exposed to world-class training that enhances our ability to investigate and solve cases. Due to Sheriff Marshall’s ability to network we have had the resources of the FBI, Secret Service and ATF at our disposal in several cases. The relationships that Sheriff Marshall has forged with our surrounding law enforcement agencies is outstanding.

No one works more closely with the Commonwealth’s Attorneys than we do. Mrs. Phillips and her staff have proven to be a wealth of information and readily provide support and guidance when needed. We have seen Mrs. Phillips put on her boots and trudge through the mud and woods with us as we investigate homicides and crime scenes. We have met with her late into the night as she pours over photographs, phone records and police reports. We have accompanied her to the state crime lab to meet with forensic experts in an effort to prepare for trials. We have witnessed firsthand Mrs. Phillips’ dedication to the citizens of Isle of Wight County and to the various law enforcement personnel who serve here in the county.

It is for all of the above reasons and more that we support Sheriff Mark Marshall and Commonwealth’s Attorney Georgette Phillips.
