Dolores Y. Seaborne

SUFFOLK — Ms. Dolores Y. Seaborne of Broad Street, Franklin, departed this life on Oct. 13, 2015, in Suffolk.

She was born on Feb. 3, 1942 in Southampton County.

Delores, “Shug Cake,” as she was affectionately called, was a member of First Baptist Church where she served on the Missionary Ministry. She organized the after school tutoring program offered at First Baptist Church.

“Shug Cake” grew up in Franklin and was nurtured by her mother, Geraldine Pierce and grandmother, Hester Pierce.

She was a graduate of Hayden High School and a former Hayden Wildcat basketball player. Upon high school graduation, she furthered her educational studies at Virginia Union University in Richmond, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in math.

Delores was employed with McDonald Douglas Aircraft Company as a cartographer and remained there until the company downsized. Her love of math prompted her to become an educator with the public school system in Missouri. In 2000, “Shug Cake” returned to Franklin and worked as a math instructor at Paul D. Camp Community College. She also worked as a GED Instructor at Southampton Correctional Center.

The homegoing service will be at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, First Baptist Church, 318 Hall St., Franklin, with the pastor, the Rev. D.S. Riddick Jr. delivering the message of comfort. The committal and benediction will be in Southview Cemetery.

A traditional service with dignity will be conducted by Wm. M. Johnson & Sons Funeral Home Inc., 224 S. Main St., Franklin.
