FRANKLIN
Franklin High science teacher Leslie Moring has been awarded 2015 Recognition in Science Education from the Virginia Association of Science Teachers. There are 12 different categories for the awards and only one teacher can be selected for each category. Moring won the award for the Biology category.

“It is humbling to be recognized for something that I love to do and something that I am so passionate about,” she said.

This is her fourth year teaching at Franklin High and her sixth year teaching overall. Her career began in Richmond.

Moring has a passion for science because she loves figuring out how and why things work. She also likes experimenting, trying new things and conducting labs.

When asked about what she loves about teaching science, Moring said, “I love how every day is different. Every day presents new challenges and each challenge requires one or even several solutions. I love to problem solve. Most importantly, though, I love seeing a student achieve when they thought they could not.”

Dr. Ronnie Watson was not surprised that Moring won the award.

Watson said, “As the principal at Franklin High School, I have not seen greater dedication to and enthusiasm for our children, than from Mrs. Moring.”

The rest Franklin City public school system is very proud of Moring as well.

Superintendent Dr. Willie Bell added, “We are so proud of the work that Mrs. Moring is doing for our students. We congratulate and commend her on this prestigious accomplishment.”

Bell also said that it is apparent that her coworkers at Franklin High are very proud of Moring and agree she is doing a wonderful job teaching science. He stated that a fellow teacher of Franklin High, Monica Bowles, had nominated her for this award.

Moring stated that she is happily married to her husband, Brandon, and they have a one-year-old daughter named Lilly, with whom she is sharing her excitement.

The awards for each of the categories will be presented at the annual VAST Professional Development Institute.

The event will be at the Westfield Marriott in Chantilly from Nov. 19-21. The awards ceremony is scheduled to begin on Nov. 20 at 6:30 p.m.
