A Suffolk police officer has been arrested and charged with several felony and misdemeanor charges following an alleged assault on Wednesday night.

Nicholas Mark Thompson, 34, is charged with abduction, strangulation, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and domestic assault.

Thompson was not on duty at the time of the incident, according to a city press release. He has been placed on administrative leave without pay pending an internal investigation and was transported to Western Tidewater Regional Jail following his arrest.

The victim was treated and released from the hospital, the press release stated.

“As is customary with domestic incidents, the name of the victim is not being released,” the press release states.

Both the criminal and internal affairs investigations are ongoing, the press release said.

In December 2014, Thompson was charged with brandishing a firearm and assault and battery of a household member after his then-wife alleged he had brandished his service weapon, pointed it at her temple and threatened to shoot during an altercation on Sept. 27, she wrote in a sworn statement filed with Suffolk Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.

He again assaulted her on Nov. 9, she said in the statement.

Around the same time, Thompson’s then-wife leveled allegations against another Suffolk police officer, whom she accused of having an affair with her husband.

In an arrest warrant affidavit, she told police the woman had assaulted and threatened her in Chesapeake on Nov. 12.

Last year’s case against Thompson was not prosecuted at his then-wife’s request. The case against the female officer also was dropped.
