VIRGINIA BEACH
How about having three fun field trips on one day rolled into one?

That is exactly what the youth and staff of the Franklin Summer Super Jam did on Aug. 7. Leaving from the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center early in the morning, the group traveled directly to Virginia Beach, which is noted as one of the leading vacation spots of America.

The first stop of the day was at the ocean front of Virginia Beach. Many of the youth ventured more into the water than the expected get-your-feet wet plan. For many of the youth it was their first time experiencing the power and rotation of an ocean wave.

After drying off and a quick walk on the boardwalk and streets of Virginia Beach, it was lunch time. Mount Trashmore was the site for the group to enjoy pizza and soft drinks.

With not enough time to climb and roll down Mount Trashmore, it was off for the final stop of the day at Iceland of Virginia Beach. Once again, this was an all-time first for many of the youth to go ice skating in the summer. But surprisingly, many of the youth had experienced this in a past year’s trip to the facility.

After about two hours of skating and braving the cold of the ice, it was time for the group to load up on the bus for the return trip to Franklin.

The Franklin Summer Super Jam program is sponsored by the Franklin Boys & Girls Club of Southeast Virginia and the Franklin Department of Parks & Recreation.
