COURTLAND
The 17th Annual Cheroenhaka Indian Inter-tribal “Corn Dance” Powwow brought approximately 1,000 visitors to Courtland on Saturday.

Tourists from Mississippi, Georgia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., Florida, Germany and Japan were present, according to a press release from the Cheroenhaka Public Relations and Media consultant, Karen D. “Running Moon” Barrett. Representatives from the Cherokee, Sioux, Occoneechee, Saponi, Lakota, Lumbee, Haliwa-Saponi, Aztec, Meherrin, Onondaga, Apache, Appalachian Cherokee, Arapahoe and Tuscarora tribes were also in attendance.

The Cheroenhaka would like to thank the Southampton County Board of Supervisors for its framed proclamation declaring Saturday “Cheroenhaka (Nottoway) Indian Tribe Powwow Day.”

The tribe’s next powwow will take place from Nov. 13-15. The “Corn Harvest” Powwow also features a school day in which local elementary schools are invited to bring their students for an educational tour of Cattashowrock Town, the tribe’s replica Iroquoian village.
