FRANKLIN
A Newport News man with a reported record as a convicted felon was arrested on Saturday for possessing a firearm.

Capt. Tim Whitt, spokesman for the Franklin Police Department, said an officer was patrolling Campbell Avenue at approximately 5:10 a.m. and observed what appeared to be a person passed out inside of a vehicle. The policeman stopped to check on the man’s welfare and, while speaking with him, noticed a pistol — which proved to be a loaded Ruger 9 mm — between the driver’s seat and the center console. It became apparent the man was intoxicated after the officer had him step out of the vehicle.

The subject was identified as Tavares Montico Johnson, 33, of 1601 Rolfe Place. He was also charged with public intoxication, and he was remanded to Western Tidewater Regional Jail on $2,200 secured bond.
