Rev. John D. Cheek

FRANKLIN — The Rev. John David Cheek, 89, husband of the late Audrey Stilley Cheek, passed away on Tuesday, June 30, 2015, at his daughter’s home surrounded by his family.

He was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, a son of the late David Charles Cheek and Florence Sparkes Cheek, and was also predeceased by a son, Dannie Gray Cheek; a granddaughter, Dawn Ferguson; a son-in-law Jimmy Lee; a sister, Beaulah C. Head; and two brothers, Frank G. Cheek and Ray Cheek.

He was an Army veteran of WWII and also a Navy Veteran. John had retired from Chemical Leaman Tank Lines after 28 years of service, and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local Union 822. He was a member of Tucker Swamp Baptist Church, and a former member of the Franklin Church of God. John was the former pastor of the Boykins Church of God.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Johnnie C. Ferguson (Ronnie) of Newsoms, Terry C. Tunstall (Rick) of Courtland, Vickie C. Gray (Roger) of Newsoms, Betty C. Ferguson of Capron, Martha C. Lee of Franklin, and Cathy C. Procter (Roger) of Travelers Rest, South Carolina; a daughter-in-law, Peggy C. Cheek of Sedley; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty C. Hinson of Trap Hill, North Carolina, and Bonnie C. Hinson of Winston-Salem.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 2, in Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. Curtis Faison officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Southampton Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. today, July 1, and other times at the home of Terry and Rick Tunstall, 29293 Country Club Road, Courtland, and suggests memorials be made to any favorite charity.
