Franklin track team sets sights on state meet

FRANKLIN
The Franklin High School track team members outdid themselves when all but one of the 15 athletes who participated in the Conference Tournament qualified for the Region 1A East Tournament and several more qualified for the State Tournament, said girls team head coach Mona Sumblin.

The Conference 41 Tournament was at Sussex Central High School on May 20, with four teams participating: Franklin, Northampton, Surry and Sussex. Sussex boys and girls won the overall meet.

The Region 1A East Track and Field Tournament was also at Sussex today.

Approximately 20 schools were expected to participate. The 1A State Track & Field Tournament will be at Radford University on June 5-6, starting at 2:30 p.m. on Friday and 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Franklin results from Conference 41:

• Qwa’Neisha Barnes — third in the 1600 (7:50.34) and fourth in the 800 (3:40.82);

• Brionna Cannady — third in the shot put (17-06);

• Cierra Eley — fourth in the long jump (12-06);

• Nachelae Harper — third in the discus throw (43-11);

• Josie Rankin — fourth in the 400 (1:13.20); third in the 100 Hurdles (20:17); second in the long jump (15′) and first in the High Jump (4-10), which qualified her for the State Tournament;

• Taciona Smith — fourth in the 300 hurdles (1:04.89);

• Katelynn Woolfolk — sixth in the long jump (11-02.75) and fifth in the shot put (18-04) and 800 (3:48.59);

• Skiler Woolfolk — second in the discus throw (47-04.50), the 1600 (7:33.26) and the 800 (3:11.38);

• The girls 4X100 Relay Team of Cannady, Jazmin Jordan, Eley and Rankin placed third (56.80);

• Javonte’ Baker — third in the long jump (19′) and first in the 200 (23.88) and 100 (11.30). He ran a State qualifying time in the 100.

• Quayshaun Jefferson — fourth in the high jump (5-02); second in the long jump (19-01) and 200 Dash (24.24); and first in the triple jump (39-07) and 400 (54.19);

• Arron Sumblin — fourth in the triple jump (34′);

• Jawun Walton — fourth in the long jump (18-10) and 200 (25.10) and third in the triple jump (34-09), 100 (11.83) and 200 (25.10);

• The Boys 4X100 Relay team of Walton, Gerrell Porter, Jefferson and Baker ran a State qualifying time of 45.32.
