FRANKLIN
The Franklin-Southampton chapter of the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life hopes to “Give Cancer the Boot” at this year’s event, but is still in search of sponsors, vendors and volunteers in order to do so. After a two-year stint at Southampton High School, the occasion returns to Franklin’s Armory Field on Saturday, June 6.

“We have several changes to the event this year, in addition to the venue, and really want to get the community involved and encourage more participation in all aspects,” Elaine Fenters said. “It’s not too late to form a team, sponsor the event or volunteer your time and talent in some way to a great cause!”

This year’s Country Western-themed event will feature a number of additions from years past, including a silent auction with donations from local businesses, events for children and a live country concert, performed by Virginia Beach native Brian Grilli and his accoustic guitar.

The day will begin with the survivors and caregivers’ lap at 9 a.m., and will be followed by team laps and competitions. At noon, participants will grab their boots — be it cowboy, rain or combat boots — and dance around the track. Grilli will perform at 2 p.m., and line dancing will commence at 3 p.m. Scavenger hunts, poker laps and raffles will fill out the evening until the Luminaria and memory lap at 8 p.m.

For survivors and their caregivers, specifically, a dinner will proceed the event on Saturday, May 30, at Paul D. Camp Community College. They’ll be provided breakfast on the day of the event at 8 a.m., play bingo throughout the day and be treated to a manicure by Southampton High School Cosmetology students at 4 p.m. These activities are free to those survivors and caregivers wearing their Relay For Life T-shirts.
