The Southampton County School Board Selection Commission will host a public hearing on Tuesday, June 9, in regard to the current terms for both the Franklin-Hunterdale and Berlin-Ivor district seats ending at the end of the month.

The hearing will take place at 11 a.m. in the school board offices, 21308 Plank Road, Courtland. Selection of said positions will take place the following week, Tuesday, June 16, at the same time and location. Southampton County Public Schools is among 24 of Virginia’s 134 school districts where voters do not choose school board members.

Both Lynn Bradley (Franklin-Hunterdale) and Florence Reynolds (Berlin-Ivor) are eligible to remain on the school board, but must be nominated or nominate themselves to serve again. Bradley, 58, confirmed to The Tidewater News that she would be seeking a second term, while Reynolds, 74, declined to speak on returning for her ninth.

In an extreme situation where a board member is not appointed by July 1, the start of the new school year, the current board member filling the seat would remain until another could be selected.

Those seeking the position must live within the respective district to qualify, and that county officials and school board employees are not eligible. For more information, stop by or call the school board offices or call Parrish at 653-2692.
