COURTLAND
Three fire and rescue crews were able to salvage much of a Courtland home on Sunday, said Courtland Volunteer Fire Department Chief Brian Futrell. That said, there was heavy fire damage upstairs and some smoke damage downstairs.

The Courtland Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched at 9:28 a.m. on Sunday to a structure fire on Bateman Street. Courtland firefighters arrived at 9:36 that morning to a scene of heavy smoke coming from the top of the building. Shortly thereafter they received assistance from the Hunterdale and Sedley Volunteer Fire Departments, as well as Courtland Rescue. With 20 crew members on scene, the fire was out by 9:58 a.m.

Units cleared at 12:23 p.m. after a salvage and overhaul operation to make sure the fire didn’t rekindle.

Nobody was hurt, as nobody was living in the structure, said Futrell. A neighbor called in the fire to dispatch.

The chief said the cause of the fire is undetermined at this time, but it is believed to have started in the second story.
