ISLE OF WIGHT
The Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office needs the public’s help in determining the exact whereabouts of homicide victim Jean Marie Smith during the 24 hours before her death.

Smith, 29, was out of town until the afternoon of April 15, and the approximate time of her death was on the evening of April 16.

Anyone who had contact with Smith or knows the whereabouts of her during the time leading up to her death is asked to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.

Smith’s body was discovered in the area of Hatcher’s Lane this past Friday. Her last known address was on Patriot Crescent in Hampton.

A gunshot wound was the cause of her death, according to a preliminary autopsy performed over the weekend by the Medical Examiner’s office in Norfolk.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service has determined that Smith was honorably discharged from the Navy in 2011.

There was no missing person report filed for Smith. When her body was first discovered, authorities were not able to identify who she was and sought public input. By Saturday, autopsy results by the medical examiner led to identification.

No information on a potential suspect has been released.

Any additional detail will be released as it becomes available.
