The Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the body found on Friday in the area of Hatcher’s Lane as a homicide.

The woman has been identified as Jean Marie Smith, 29. Her last known address was on Patriot Crescent in Hampton. A gunshot wound was the cause of her death, according to a preliminary autopsy performed over the weekend by the Medical Examiner’s office in Norfolk. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service has determined that Smith was honorably discharged from the Navy in 2011.

There was also no missing person report filed for Smith, and the time of death has not yet been determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office. When the body of Smith was first discovered, authorities were not able to identify who she was, so they sought public input.

No information on a potential suspect has been released.
