Susie Evans Slate

ZUNI—Susie Annettee Evans Slate passed away on April 18, 2015.
She was born on April 17, 1947, in Norfolk, Virginia, to Joshua and Violet Evans.
She leaves behind her husband of 45 years, Richard; and her daughter, Karen Marie Meade and her husband, Rob, and her daughter Penny Slate; step-daughters, Gail Lee and husband, Rolando; Brenda Slate and stepson, John Slate; grandchildren, Alexandra, Anthony, Kevin,Richard, Melissa, Daniel, Brian, Ryan, Cindy and Sierra; and several great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by her brother, Roger Jefferson and his wife, Louise, and their children and grandchildren; her beloved fur babies, Goldie and Teddy; and her horse, Carolina Charlie, which brought her so much happiness watching him show and win her many trophies and ribbons.
Susie was a graduate of Norview High School, and was disabled but had a very successful career in the transportation industry for Containership Agency (MSC) and Farrell Lines.
She was a former member of the Traffic Club over her career, which was how she became part of the startup and planning committee for the very first Harborfest. She also was the secretary to the Italian Consulate.
She had worked for Byerly Publications (Tidewater News and Chesapeake Post) for several years.
She loved researching her family history over 15 generations. and wrote a book of her studies. “To Be Remembered Is To Be Immortal.”
She was a member and former president of the Chesterfield Chapter of the UDC, DAR, Daughters of War of 1812, and was working on membership for Daughters of American Colonists and the Grand Dames of America. She loved to dance, hunt, fish and go camping with her family.
The funeral will be at Mt. Carmel Christian Church, 27650 Walters Highway, Carrsville, on Wednesday, April 22, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Blake James officiating. Burial will follow at the Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
Visitation with the family will be following the services at her daughter Karen’s home at 3334 Joyners Bridge Road, Carrsville.
