FRANKLIN
The Franklin High School Broncos are looking to return to the state tournament to claim the boys and possibly the girls 4×100 championship, said head coach Dennis Sumblin.

The team also returns the 200-meter dash state runner-up JaVonte’ Baker, who is looking to win the state title this year.

On the 4×100, the team lost two athletes, but replace them with Darrien Duck, JaWun Walton and Gerrell Porter as an alternate. Baker and Quayshaun Jefferson are the returning runners. The relay team was only seconds off of the state qualifying time.

Jefferson also placed fifth in the state last year in the 400-meter. Yesterday, he was two-tenths of a second away from a state qualifying time for that event.

For the girls, sophomores Skiler Woolfolk and Kayla Powell and juniors Josie Rankin and Gabrielle Wade-Bell are possibilities for state competition in their events, Sumblin said. He added that the girls 4×100 relay team of Powell, Jazmin Jordan, Cierra Eley, Wade-Bell, Rankin (alternate) and Brionna Cannady (alternate) should qualify for the state tournament.

Newcomers Katelyn Woolfolk (freshman, 800-meter), Davyn Everette (freshman mile run) and Jack Sykes (senior, shot put and discus) placed in yesterday’s meet and should be competitive throughout the season.
