WINDSOR
Following a nearly hour-long closed session, the Isle of Wight County School Board reconvened in open session on Wednesday evening to announce that it will keep the Newport District seat open to allow for applicants.

Kent Hildebrand, the former chairman, announced his resignation via a press release last Friday. He would only say that he’s stepping down “for personal reasons.”

An attempt to reach him for further comment was unsuccessful.

Denise Tynes of Smithfield District, who stepped up as chairwoman, said, “We will continue to open the search. We want to give it at least three weeks. If you’re interested, you have until March 25, and action will be taken on March 30.”

Tynes also nominated Perkins as vice chairwoman, to which she agreed and was approved by all board members.

Pending approval from the board’s attorney, the panel also agreed to a contract for a walk-in freezer at Carrsville Elementary School, and an E-rate contract.

Letters of interest in the board seat may be sent to Tracey Reutt, board clerk, at 820 W. Main St., Smithfield, VA 23430.
