COURTLAND—William Leland “Bill” Whitehead Jr., 78, passed away on March 17, 2015.

Mr. Whitehead was a lifelong resident of Southampton County, and was a son of the late W. Leland and Lucy Boothe Whitehead, and was predeceased by a brother, Leonard B. Whitehead.

He was retired from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services where he served as regional supervisor.

He was a graduate of Virginia Tech and a member of Courtland United Methodist Church.

Mr. Whitehead is survived by his wife of 50 years, Annabelle Gwaltney Whitehead; daughter, Linda Pittman (Wilmer); son, Leonard G. Whitehead (Leslie); sister, Marionette W. Spain; and five grandchildren, Dudley, Ryan and Peyton Pittman, Kelsey and Kristen Whitehead.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, in Courtland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Andrew Book officiating. The burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Southampton Agriculture Museum or American Heart Association.
