FRANKLIN
The family of Linda P. Soucek and the Franklin City Educational Foundation proudly announce the creation of two scholarships in memory of Mrs. Soucek. Linda, who passed away in December of 2013, was a beloved English teacher of many years at Franklin High School.

One of the two scholarships to be awarded each year will be presented to a student in the regular senior English course, with the other presented to a student in either Advanced Placement English or Dual Enrollment English.

Each scholarship will award $1,000 to the student with the greatest academic achievement (especially in English), oral presentation skill and extra-curricular activity. Along with other selection criteria, and in lieu of an essay submission, finalists will undergo a personal interview as part of the selection process. Students may apply for these scholarships by way of the Franklin High School office.

Among the most extraordinary teachers, Mrs. Soucek loved her students, and she selflessly dedicated herself in every way possible “to get them to believe in themselves and then watch them take off!”

These two scholarships amount to a tangible effort to recognize student achievement in English and thus represent Mrs. Soucek’s dedication to students’ future success and happiness.

According to Michelle Barlow, chairman of the English Department when Mrs. Soucek was teaching there, “This scholarship honors Linda Soucek and epitomizes everything she believed in as an instructor. She was a teacher who always found ways to acknowledge and reward students at every level of the academic spectrum. She brought the best out of students from right where she met them, showing them their potential and never their limitations. What an absolute blessing Linda was and will always be to Franklin High School students!”

Anyone who would like to make a tax-deductible contribution to help fund this scholarship program should send a check made out to the Franklin City Educational Foundation, Inc., with a designation on the Memo line to say “for the Linda P. Soucek Memorial English Scholarships,” to Post Office Box 96, Franklin VA 23851. All contributions will be much appreciated.

The Franklin City Educational Foundation, Inc., a non-profit, charitable 501 (c) (3) organization, is the enabling host and vehicle for these and other scholarships, as well as other programs that benefit the students, teachers, and the cause of public education in our community.
