CAPE CHARLES
Over the weekend, the Franklin High School wrestling team were able to bring back something from the Eastern Shore — A Conference 41 championship trophy.

Competing in the three-team Division 1A conference, five athletes were able to earn gold medals as Franklin overtook host Northampton High School for the victory. The Broncos scored 114 points on the day.

“They all wrestled real good this weekend,” head coach Daniel “Bull” Johnson said. “If they wrestle like that this weekend, we’ll probably have 5-6 make the state tournament.”

This week, the 10 wrestlers that the Broncos have been able to field here at the end of the season are preparing for the regionals. The tournament will be on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 13-14, at Parry McCluer High School near Lexington.

“We’re just doing a lot of wrestling to get everyone’s endurance up, so that they can wrestle a six-minute match,” Johnson said about how they’ve been practicing leading up to tournament season. “We’ve got our moves down, it’s just time to drill hard.

“We had a great practice yesterday,” he added about Monday. “We’re just looking for the rest of the week to go the same. If it does, we should have a good tournament.”

Johnson said they would have a light practice on Thursday to make sure everyone is still in top condition for the regional tournament.

Athletes who place in the top four this weekend will earn a roster spot for the VHSL State Tournament, which will be next weekend in Salem.

As for the conference tournament, Cameron Seddon, wrestling in the 160-pound class, took gold, as did Stefone Pearson, 170, Khiry Reese, 182, Jack Sykes, 195, and Tyrique Warren, 220. Patrick Sheehy, 120, earned silver, as did Ta’Quan Wiggins, 126, Gerrell Porter, 132 and Cameron Bullock, 152. Stephen Flournoy, 145, took bronze.

Sykes remains undefeated this season at 21-0. Pearson has the second best record at 19-2, Reese sits at 17-3 and Seddon at 16-4.
