FRANKLIN
Boykins Girl Scout Group No. 5073, sponsored by Boykins Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, will host its fifth Annual Martin Luther King Jr. “Unity in the Community” Walk on Monday, Jan. 19, at the Paul D. Camp Community College campus. The walk will start at 9 a.m. and conclude with a program at the Workforce Development Center.

This year, members of the Lambda Psi Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and the Franklin/Southampton Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. will conduct the Dr. Martin Luther King Commemorative program. The partnership will also include joint efforts of the Student Activities department of Paul D. Camp Community College.

“Our students are the heartbeat of the college; it’s through their volunteerism, commitment and community engagement that the college is a better place to learn. So we are pleased to be a part of this annual activity again this year,” said college President Paul. Wm. Conco. “The college’s mission to provide diverse learning opportunities to the communities we serve is in direct alignment with our annual engagement with this wonderful community event. We hope that all will come out and be part of this effort.”

The scouts invite all to come together for this free event to help commemorate all that Dr. King fought for as a leader of the Civil Rights Movement. It is all about participation, inspiration and recognition for all. Dr. King’s life and legacy was about his commitment to service and social justice.

Dr. Andrea Hall-Leonard, a Chowan University adjunct professor, will give an analysis of the “I Have A Dream” speech by Dr. King. Juanita Smith, founder of Kingdom Building Equipping School of Newport News, will give a tribute to Mrs. Coretta Scott King.

The 2015 Debutantes (Jasmine Davis, Erykah Harris, Samiyah Lane, Andrianna Leonard, LeAnna Leonard, Ava’Dai Morton, Tanisha Myrick, A’Roya Rose, Kiana Reid, Alyssia Ricks, Kayla Wiggins and Audriana Zollicoffer) and Beaux (Charles Branch, Shaunye Burton, Cedric Everett, Bruce Odom, Darius Neclos, Kirby Brooks, Marcus Joyner), all students of Franklin and Southampton County Public Schools, will perform a tribute to the children of the late activist.

The scouts are asking those attending to bring a canned good or nonperishable item and/or a school supply to be donated to the community for this is a day of service. The canned goods or nonperishable items will be added to the food giveaway being distributed by Mount Olive Food ministry.
