FRANKLIN—Minister Marie Barnes Scott of Delaware Road, Franklin, passed away on Dec. 31, 2014.

The Southampton County native was born on Nov. 30, 1940, to George W. and Martha Jordan Barnes.

Marie was a graduate of Hayden High School, class of 1960. Upon high school graduation, she matriculated at Norfolk State College, where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in social work in 1986.

Marie was a social worker with the Franklin Department of Social Services until she retired in 1996 after 22 years of service.

She was a member of White Oak Spring Baptist Church, where she served on the Usher Board and its Union, Missionary Society and as a Sunday School teacher.

On July 18, 1999, Marie accepted the call, became an ordained Minister and furthered her education in the Seminary at the Virginia University of Lynchburg.

She was an active participant in many senior services activities, namely, Senior Inspirational Group, the Golden Voices Choir and the volunteer group. Marie was also a member of AARP for seniors.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Gladys Jordan, Ruth Porter, Betty Whitehead, Mary Davis, George Barnes, Wesley Barnes, Harvey Barnes, Jasper and James Barnes and Floyd Barnes.

She is survived by husband, Herbert R. Scott; four sisters, Delores Barnes, Frances Flowers, Thelma Stith Louise Joyner; and a brother, Richard Barnes. Her memory will also be cherished by nieces, nephews and many other relatives.

The homegoing celebration will be on Tuesday, Jan. 6, at noon in White Oak Spring Baptist Church, 26125 Delaware Rd., Franklin, with the pastor, the Rev. Melvin Wofford delivering the message of comfort. The committal and benediction will be in Southview Cemetery.

On the day of service, her remains will rest in church for viewing by 10 a.m.

A traditional service with dignity will be conducted by Wm. M. Johnson & Sons Inc., 224 S. Main St., Franklin, Virginia.
