COURTLAND—Adeline Grissom Kitchen, 92, of Courtland, Virginia, passed away on Dec. 28, 2014.
She was born on March 19, 1922, and was the daughter of Edward Vance Grissom and Beulah Modlin Grissom. She is predeceased by her husband, Ulysses Kitchen; sisters, Bessie Baker and Cornelia Gordon; and brothers, Ruben Grissom, Vance Grissom, Lineberry Grissom and Robert Mitchell.
Mrs. Kitchen is survived by her sons, Larry Kitchen and wife, Elaine, of Glen Allen, Virginia; and Vance Kitchen and wife, Sue, of Midlothian, Virginia. She is further survived by four grandchildren, April Fowler and husband, Danny; Dory Newkirk and husband, Travis; Lucas Kitchen and wife, Lindsey; and Katie Dormstetter; and six great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Kitchen had a long career with the Southampton County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office. In her first 25 years of full-time service to the Clerk’s Office, she worked with six judges and five court clerks. One of the attorneys called her “one of the finest public servants the county ever had.” She continued to work part-time for many years before finally retiring.
Mrs. Kitchen will long be remembered for her pleasant demeanor and kind words for everyone.
Funeral services will be on Friday, Jan. 2, 2015, at 2 p.m. in the Courtland Baptist Church, 22264 Main St., Courtland, Virginia, with the Rev. Tommy Speight officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Courtland, followed by a reception at the Courtland Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Courtland Baptist Church, Courtland Rescue Squad or Courtland Fire Department.
