FRANKLIN
Corey Porter and Darrien Duck led the way as the Franklin High School Broncos defeated the Southampton High School Indians 65-52 on Monday evening in the FHS gym.

Breakaway points were a big factor in this, as the Indians couldn’t get back on defense off of turnovers. Porter scored 8 points in a row on fast-break layups to end the first half, putting the score at 17-39 Broncos before Brendan Simms hit a three just before the buzzer sounded.

The Indians closed the deficit to 27-39 early on in the third quarter, and then went on to outscore the Broncos 32-26 in the second half. Most of that came in the third quarter, as Franklin regained the edge in the fourth, outscoring the Indians 18-16.

“They did a great job,” said Indians Head Coach Sharone Bailey of Franklin. “They were well coached and had a lot of energy tonight.

“They put up a great fight, but we didn’t match it. We have to do a better job preparing them, as coaches.”

Bailey said his team shot 33 percent from the free throw line, and 29 percent from the field.

On the Franklin side, Head Coach Robby Cutchins said the intensity was part of the game plan.

“I told the kids to win the games within the game,” Cutchins said. “And I thought we did. We controlled the tempo, and made it the game we wanted it to be.”

Cutchins said in height and in size, they were outmatched by the Indians, but they made up for that with effort. Franklin out-rebounded Southampton 40-33.

“I told them that we had to stop all second chance baskets by making sure we got to the ball,” he said.

“The Indians are a strong-shooting team — we couldn’t let them just throw it up and have their taller forwards get the rebounds.”

Winning the match-ups on the guard end was also a big part of the game plan.

“We had to have all loose balls, and I think we did good in that,” he said. “It was a good effort by this team. I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

Duck had 20 points, and Porter had 16. For the Indians, Darius Bell had 13 points and Cedric Parham had 10 points.

Franklin will next play Sussex at home, and Southampton will play Windsor on the road. Both of these TriRivers District games are today, Dec. 10.
