Robert W. Hurley

Robert Wilson Hurley, 62, passed away on Nov. 15, 2014, in Franklin, Virginia. Born on June 27, 1952, in Richmond, Virginia, to the late Francis Wilson and Margaret Crews Hurley, Bobby lived his entire life in Richmond.

He was an active member of Westhampton Baptist Church for over 50 years where he attended services and Sunday School regularly, and played on and later helped coach the church softball team.

Bobby attended special education classes at Tucker High School, then went to work at Goodwill Industries for a few years. He then worked for 29 years in the dining services at the University of Richmond and retired in January 2008.

Bobby was an avid sports fan, his favorite teams being the Atlanta Braves, the Washington Redskins and the Richmond Spiders.

He was well known for his big bear hugs and his friendliness.

Bobby is survived by his devoted sister, Ruthie Ponder and her husband, Dr. Mike Ponder, of Franklin; two very special nieces, Rebecca Ponder (Alistar Harris) of Hanover, Virginia, and Kylee Ponder of Richmond; a special nephew, Evan Ponder of Franklin; an aunt; and numerous cousins.

The memorial service will be at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at Westhampton Baptist Church, 6112 Three Chopt Rd., Richmond, with the Rev. William Duganne and the Rev. Dr. William B. Hardison officiating. The family graveside service will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Chatham, Virginia, prior to the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Westhampton Baptist Church, 6112 Three Chopt Rd., Richmond, VA 23226.
